Back to league action

After reaching the last 16 of both the Irish and Intermediate Cups in back-to-back matches, it’s a return to league football for Armagh City at the weekend.

They will entertain West Belfast side Sports and Leisure Swifts at Holm Park this Saturday, February 1, kick-off 3pm.

While the visitors find themselves at the wrong end of the Belfast Telegraph Championship Two table, they should not be taken lightly as City found to their cost in the reverse fixture at the end of August last.

On that occasion, the sides drew 2-2, with Armagh just managing to grab a vital point through Ultan Lennon in the third minute of injury-time. City’s other scorer on the day was Matthew Hynds. But the local side should be confident of a more positive result this time around as they protect an unbeaten 20-match run at Holm Park.

Armagh should be at full strength for the match, although club captain Liam Cullen is recovering from a slight injury sustained against Ards in the Irish Cup replay.

And the race is on for attacking midfielder Shea McGerrigan to be fit for the clash after his prolonged bid to overcome a severe hamstring injury.

If not, then he will definately be aiming for a squad place against Glentoran is the glamour sixth-round Irish Cup tie at Holm Park on Saturday, February 8.
