City chairman calls for optimism

Armagh City’s chairman insists there is plenty of room for optimism for the forthcoming football season.
Speaking at the club’s annual general meeting on Thursday last, Philip Johnston said, “There is certainly no reason why we cannot make great strides this year”.
He went on, “It has been a long and hard road over the past three seasons but now we are getting the benefits of the sterling efforts from everyone involved with the club.
“Winning the Youth Cup in 2012 has been a real boost and, with younger players coming into the senior squad, along with four new signings, we should be in a strong position to contend for honours this time around”, the chairman added.
He commended the very successful youth system within the club and the advanage of running a Reserve team once more.
The chairman also praised the efforts of senior manager Marty, his back-up team, and the players for their fine attitude and club loyalty.
Philip concluded by thanking his fellow committee members for all their hard work over the past three seasons, describing them “as the best in the league”.

The sitting officials were all re-elected at the annual general meeting.
Philip Johnston remains chairman, with Aidan Murphy vice-chairman, Geoff Lester treasurer/president/trustee and Stephen Richardson secretary. The fixtures secretary is John Hynds.
All five are members of the senior committee, along with Bertie Hutchinson, Spencer Hutchinson, Noel Humphries, Norman Wray, Eric Black, Richard Nesbitt, Gary Cooke and Paul Hayes.
Meanwhile, on the playing front, Armagh City have a run of three home games, starting this Saturday, August 18, when they play hosts to Ballymoney United, kick-off 3pm.
The following weekends they meet Wakehurst and Queens, on August 25 and September 1 respectively, also starting at 3pm.
In between they have a difficult away tie in the Irn Bru Cup second round to Championship One club Bangor. This game kicks-off at 7.45pm on Monday evening, August 27.
