Armagh City 2-3 Donegal Celtic

Armagh City played their 2nd home game in the NIWFA Championship.  The game started out quite scrappy with both teams not settling on the ball.  Armagh had the best of the opening chances with Megan Bothwell receiving ball from midfield to see her left foot effort go wide. In another move Claire Taylor was fouled inside the box with nothing given City played on only to see Bothwell then brought down for a penalty.  Charlene Troughton stepped up for the spot kick and calmly slotted the ball to the keepers right and into the back of the net.  City one nil up. Donegal Celtic kept pushing forward for the equaliser and it paid off when a ball from the left was played into the box found its way past the armagh defence and some how ended up in the armagh net. Halftime 1-1.

The second half saw a much better display of football.  Armagh were  out of the blocks quicker and could easily have got a penalty when a

ball played through the middle saw the Donegal Celtic keeper take

Troughton out with the ball no were near, but nothing was given.

Armagh kept pushing forward with Claire Taylor and Caroline O’Hare

linking up well in midfield. O’Hare soon seen her shot from 20 yards

go just over the top of the cross bar. DC kept nipping forward and  looked dangerious down the left. Armagh defence stood strong until 10

mins from time a ball played through the middle saw the DC foward

played through and with a bit of pace the forward beat the Armagh

defence to lob the ball over the keepers head. 2-1 to the visiting

team but it wasn’t to last long when 5 minutes later after some good

football from City and skill from Taylor led to a foul 25 yards which

Taylor struck and gave the keeper no chance with the ball hit the top

right of the net. 2-2

The last 5 minutes saw some end to end football and some good passing from both teams but when DC attacked down the right and their winger got a cross into the centre foward who at 10 yards infront of goal held the ball up only to lay off to the DC player to find the back of the net. Donegal Celtic 3-2 up with 2 minutes and injury time remaining.  Armagh pushed forward in numbers but to no avail there just wasn’t enough time.
