city ladies

Armagh City Ladies hosted Coleraine at Holm Park Friday 20th April in their opening game of the season in the NIWFA Championship.
It was to be City’s first game in the Championship after being newly promoted last season and against a team they’ve never played before so the opposition was unknown to them.
From the kick off Armagh dominated the game with brilliant pass and move play and could have went 1-0 up early on through Siobhan Mackle only for the Coleraine keeper reading the play. Charlene Troughton was causing Coleraine plenty of problems down the right side with her quick feet and close control. Eventually Armagh City broke the deadlock as Claire Taylor on the left turned and shot from 20 yards out to leave the keeper stranded with a high shot into the top right corner of the net. City deservable 1-0 up and cruising through the first half with Coleraine having little of the play.
The second half saw a more nervy encounter. Coleraine dominated the play and when Armagh failed to clear their lines at the back, the Coleraine forward nipped in and tucked the ball into the empty net for the easiest of goals. Coleraine kept pushing for another but Armaghs defence worked hard as a unit and weren’t letting anything past.
As the second half went on Armagh started to pick up the pace again and could have taken the lead again but for Katie Boylan’s shot fall wide of the post. Siobhan Mackle also saw her left foot effort fall straight into the hands of the Coleraine keeper. City had to work hard in midfield to break down Coleraines attack as they threatened everytime. In another attack City broke down the right and the ball was picked up by Claire Taylor to shoot from a wide right position to see her shot come off the underside of the cross bar and scrambled away.
City then were to get their second goal of the game. A low cross in from a corner from Charlene Troughton landed to centre back Megan Cinnamond who shot from 15 yards out and with the tiniest deflection decieved the keeper to hit the back of the net.  That was to be the winning goal in this thrilling encounter as City went on to take the 3 well earned points.
The ladies next came is at home on Friday 27th April against Donegal Celtic 7:30pm kick off
